CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
This time, instead of directly competing, Kama shifted slightly, still taking a step forward but moving slightly to the side. It was a subtle thing but nearly proved Thornâs undoing. Both of their domains had expanded to take up half the stage, forming two nigh-perfect half-circles that pressed against one another, balancing the otherâs force.
If both had taken a step straight forward as they had the first time, the balance would have remained, though the pressure between them would have increased. But because Kama stepped at a slight angle, the balance shifted, causing Thorn to lurch to the side as his domain moved unexpectedly.
It only took him a fraction of a second to regain his balance, but during the moment when his world had shifted unexpectedly, Kama struck. It was a simple move, a slap that simultaneously looked harmless and set off warning bells in Thornâs head. Though the slap didnât look like it would reach him, Thorn wasnât about to take any chances and used Titanâs Step to retreat.
A wave of force radiated from Kamaâs palm, and despite his best efforts, Thorn found he couldnât keep it away. He didnât know how it was infiltrating his domain, but it was undeniable that it was, giving new meaning to the ungraspable nature of Kamaâs power. Since he couldnât dodge, Thorn pressed his palm forward, intercepting the strike and deflecting it to the side, staggering slightly as the force radiated through his body.
Jeroâs attacks hadnât managed to move him even an inch, yet now, with his first strike, Kama forced Thorn back. Rather than grow worried or frustrated, a hint of joy appeared like a spark in Thornâs chest. Not wanting to be outdone, Thorn took a step forward and used the edge of his hand as a blade, hacking down at Kama.
A purplish-black line followed the tips of his fingers, forming a large void blade that shot toward his opponent, forcing Kama to dodge to the side. Every one of the god beastâs movements were ethereal, as if he both existed and didnât exist at the same time. With his void blade dodged, Thorn pulled his domain close, condensing it into a near-physical substance that shrouded his body like armor.
Drawing back his fist, he used Titanâs Step to move closer, appearing like a ghost behind Kama, whose feet had just touched the ground. This wasnât the first time Kama had seen Thorn move so quickly. But in his fight against Jero, Thorn had always moved in a straight line, directly in front of his opponent. Seeing Thorn move behind him just as easily caught Kama off guard.
Kamaâs reaction time was still excellent, and as Thornâs fist tore through his shoulder, his body faded away, reappearing across the ring. Not wanting to let him go, Thorn charged once more, but Kama spread his hands, unleashing a blast of light that stabbed at Thorn from all directions.
To Thorn it felt as if millions of needles had suddenly jabbed into his skin, setting his body aflame.
